Vancouver Convention Centre

May 6-8/2010, AIBC Annual Conference: Intern Architect Derek DeLand gave a presentation at the 20 x 20 Vision Pecha Kucha event, titled "Architecture in Transition" with 9 other student, intern and recently registered architects. Downspace Creative did the graphic design and layout for Derek's talk. Above are a few of the images used.

http://friendsofthebloedel.ca/info.html
I recently volunteered at the fundraiser for the Bloedel Conservatory, which has been under threat of closure by the City of Vancouver.
The Friends of the Bloedel have successfully delayed closure of the facility for now, but the threat of permanent loss as a green oasis is still very real. The Friends of the Bloedel are preparing an Expression of Interest for the Vancouver Park Board and are offering to work collaboratively with the Park Board in support of the Bloedel Conservatory for the following purposes:
1. To fundraise in support of the Bloedel Conservatory.
2. To provide marketing and public relations.
3. To improve revenue streams.
4. To develop and provide public programming and education.
5. To protect the legal interests.
6. To provide similar or related services as recommended by our membership and executive.
There is a current a fundraising drive with the goal of raising $250,000 by August 30, 2010.
Also, there will be a Silent Auction on Thursday, June 24, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the Floral Hall at VanDusen. Hope to see you there!

A site I like:
http://www.swellfuture.com
"The path to our sustainable future demands the full range of human creativity, ingenuity and innovation. It demands that we investigate diverse approaches to creating a material culture that is not at odds with nature but acts in concert with it. It demands that we consider every aspect of how the objects that we create are made: who makes them, from what materials, under what conditions, how long will they last and what happens to them when we are done with them.
Swell presents the work of a diverse group of people - designers, artists, craftspeople, and artisans from around the globe - whose work takes myriad approaches to the challenge of creating sustainable design. Each product exhibited in Swell shows some combination of sustainable strategies at work. Our hope is that by bringing these exceptional designs together in close quarters, new connections will be made, new directions will become apparent, new fires will be lit and one more step will be taken toward the promise of Future Friendly Design."

2010 Global 100: The Definitive Corporate Sustainability Benchmark The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World is an annual project initiated by Corporate Knights, the magazine for clean capitalism. In 2010, Corporate Knights collaborated with three strategic partners to identify the Corporate Knights Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World. The Corporate Knights Global 100 team included Inflection Point Capital Management—a sustainability-focused asset management venture founded by Dr. Matthew Kiernan, Legg Mason's Global Currents Investment Management, and Phoenix Global Advisors LLC (a consulting and technology platform focused on sustainability). As with past editions of the Global 100, the aim was to highlight the global corporations which have been most proactive in managing environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Launched in 2005, the annual Global 100 is announced each year during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Had a great time volunteering at Projecting Change - the final film was PIRATE FOR THE SEA, a biographical film of Paul Watson, a founding member of Greenpeace and early organizer of campaigns protesting the killing of seals, whales, and dolphins. After the film was an inspiring panel discussion with Paul Watson, director Ron Colby, and scientist and environmentalist, David Suzuki.
How Social Media Can Affect Real Social and Governmental Change:
http://bit.ly/aDHZBP
"
People have always used the “social media” of their time to effect change. Without belaboring history, consider that some of the most widely-felt changes in the Western world were made by “bloggers” using the technology of their day. Paul of Tarsus (St. Paul), wrote newsletters (epistles) that substantially influenced Christianity throughout the Mediterranean. Martin Luther brought church abuses to light and initiated the Protestant Reformation through his 95 updates (theses), and Thomas Paine spread his blog (printed pamphlets) about democracy to the masses in the ramp up to the American Revolution...."

The Value of Design
Good business outcomes treat design as a holistic process that pulls in savvy marketing and research, as well as smart ideas, says IDEO's Diego Rodriguez:

'Good design does not always equal good business. But good business outcomes—especially when the goal is to create new sources of value in the world—are most often achieved through a well-structured design process that is more holistic and inclusive than the notion of good design.'
